Tipping Point for ‘developing’ countries? Mary Meeker’s 2014 Internet Trends
This is always a must-read report as it’s been quite accurate over the years.
Key takeaways for me:
- Facebook OWNS photo sharing. See slide 62 to understand why they bought WhatsApp. Instagram + Facebook + WhatsApp = dominance.
- Screen minutes, slide 96, show the massive adoption of tech in developing countries. Not so sure that ‘developing’ is still the correct view to hold when you see that USA is 6th below Vietnam, UK is 15th below South Africa and Argentina, and Australia is below Kenya?
- Sensors in devices are creating big data which are creating better user experiences as we learn by measuring how consumers engage. Slides 60 and 67.
- 80% of China’s 500MM internet users consume via mobile! Slide 129
- Live TV is dying fast as on-demand rises. (Slide 122) Combine this with Apps replacing TV channels (Slide 106) and it seems distribution is already disrupted. Fun times ahead trying to control that content.
- Big Data is real and solving real problems. Slide 88.
- And finally, one for Australia to pay attention to as a country of immigrants — “60% of tech’s top 25 companies were founded by first or second-generation Americans. In the top 10, make that 70%. Meanwhile, the number of foreign students sent home for lack of a limited-availability H-1B visa has nearly quadrupled in the past decade “. Enough said!
