Ignorance, Stubbornness or Genius? Murdoch’s The Daily for the iPad 2 arrives.
With the launch of ‘The Daily’ for the iPad, the latest attempt at re-monetizing news has arrived.
Is this iTunes for news, where the price point is perfect for quality paid news from respected journalists, or is it just lovely eye candy? It may be too much, too late to convert the masses from the free news that we’ve come to expect and become very adept at sourcing for free.
Using EarlyEdition for the iPad, I can add any interesting RSS News Feeds to Google Reader, and then import these into EarlyEdition. This gives me instant access in a simple Newspaper format. I get all the news I can consume in a day, on demand, via EarlyEdition. Thanks to its smart newspaper style interface, I’d be hard pressed to pay for the same content.
And I’m not necessarily looking for a richer media experience. In fact, quite the opposite — staying up to date with bite sized chunks currently suits me nicely, thank you.
It’s early days, so to be fair, EarlyEdition does require some level of effort to set up and manage. I’m sure there’s a market that wants their news packaged and delivered via the slick The Daily interface , so we may be watching a game changer unfold.
Let’s see… after all, they only have to show a profit on the $30 Million invested, and if there’s a team that can pull it off, News Corp could be the one.
